The Fairphone 2 was designed to do something very special: help us get closer to our vision of a fair economy. The phone itself is just the starting point.
Thank you for believing that there’s a better way to do things. Here’s a quick reminder of what we have learned, improved and achieved with Fairphone 2.
Our modular design proved that doing something unconventional can deliver major benefits. It makes the Fairphone 2 easy to open and repair, allows users to upgrade their cameras, and also makes our phones more sustainable.
Including batteries and screens, we will still supply spare parts and accessories for the next three years. Time for a repair? Spare parts for your Fairphone 2.
Beyond hardware, we also improved longevity with two major software system upgrades to help you keep your phone for longer. Fairphone 2 was the first smartphone with a Snapdragon 801 chipset that received an update to Android 7 – And we’re looking into further upgrades.
You don’t have to take our word for it – Greenpeace gave us their top score for green electronics in their sustainable tech report and we got the first perfect 10 on iFixit’s repairability score.
We want workers to be able to share their ideas and concerns to improve their working experience. With a selection of manufacturers, we assess the factories and collaboratively make improvements, focussing on health and safety, working hours and communication channels.

We want to be a vehicle for change in the regions that need it most, so we’ve set up traceable supply chains to source conflict-free minerals from Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Peru. Currently, we are starting a pilot project for responsible cobalt sourcing.
With the Fairphone 2, we conducted an in-depth materials study, prioritized which materials to focus on first. We integrated more responsible sources of tantalum, tin, tungsten, copper and as an industry first we managed to
source and integrate Fairtrade Gold.

With the help of our community and partners, we’re finding creative ways to maximize the value of the resources used in phones. Watch our video about our recycling collaboration with vanPlestik.
Besides collecting electronic waste from Ghana, Uganda and Rwanda, we’re also taking back used phones from our customers, selling refurbished phones, and researching the best ways to recycle our old Fairphones.
The Fairphone 2 is the latest chapter in our story, and it isn’t over yet! We’re in this together for the long haul.
