Fair Materials

Let’s do some Fairphone math.

Fair Materials

Imagine this: You’re strolling through the streets of Amsterdam, fresh stroopwafel in hand, about to take a picture for the ‘gram framed against the beautiful Amstel River. Out of nowhere, a seagull swoops in, sending both your sugary treat and your smartphone flying into the canal, never to be seen again. (This actually happened to one of our colleagues, by the way!)

So now you’re in the market for two things—first, a replacement stroopwafel, of course. Second, and more importantly, you need to get yourself a replacement phone. Ding, ding, ding! It’s time for some Fairphone math. If you break it down, it’s very easy to see that Fairphones are not only good for the planet, but they are excellent for your wallet as well. All you have to do is think long-term and look at the big picture.

If you look at flagships from other brands, you’re looking at price tags of easily €1000 and more. Comparatively, our flagship Fairphone 5 comes in at €699. Now, before the internet freaks out on us – yes, there are differences in specs that are supposed to justify the price tag; and yes, if you’re the type of person that needs a glass and titanium-encased supercomputer for your everyday life, you’ll have a ton of options. But if you’re doing regular stuff, like browsing, texting, streaming, and some light gaming, you wouldn’t notice a difference.

Fairphone also commits to fair practices, be it how we source materials and pay workers and miners or push for e-waste neutrality and climate consciousness. No other company can say that with the same conviction. When we say Fairphone cares for people and the planet, we can back it up. Take a look at our Impact Report for the full details.

It doesn’t stop there, though. As of right now, there is no other phone on the market that offers a longer window of software and hardware support. While companies like Google and Samsung are pushing for a maximum of seven years, we are setting the bar higher from the get-go, offering a minimum of eight years. That’s where the main difference pops up. The longer you use your Fairphone 5, the cheaper it becomes. Hold on to your Fairphone for eight years; it’ll cost you less than 25 cents a day! And we are committed as a company to help you keep it at least that long, if not longer.

Repair costs comparison

See the difference for yourself.

This brings us to the hardware side of things: Repairs are another hidden cost many people don’t factor in when choosing a new device. On average, getting a broken display fixed on a non-Fairphone device can cost upwards of €200 – at least. Not to mention, you have to leave your busted phone at a repair center for days. Changing the display on the Fairphone costs half of that, coming in at €99, and you can do it at home within minutes. Swap in a new battery for less than €40 or replace camera units for anywhere between €40 and €70. Replacing the USB-C port can go up to €130 with other brands; we offer a brand new USB-C port for less than €20! On average, when it comes to spare parts, we’re roughly 63% cheaper compared to the big brands in the industry.

This is all to say that when you choose a Fairphone, you’re not just choosing what’s fair to the planet and the people who make your phone. You’re choosing what is fair to you in the long run. And if you’re still not convinced, check out the Fairphone 4, now retailing at €499. You’re already saving €200!

For a limited time, the Fairphone 4 and Fairphone 5 come with a free  €100 spare parts gift card valid for five years. We’re lowering our best-in-class repair costs even further with free spare parts for your Fairphone. Now that’s fair!

    What are Fairmined credits?

We’ve said it before. We’ll say it again. Artisanal and small-scale mines (ASM) play a crucial role in the mining industry, providing livelihoods for millions of people worldwide. But the reality is, working in these mines is often incredibly dangerous, and the communities involved are some of the most marginalized. Ignoring their struggles or blacklisting...

E-waste Recycling: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

E-waste is the fastest growing waste stream globally. In 2022, a record amount of 62 megatons of e-waste was generated, with little to no information on how 78% of this is collected and recycled. The amount of e-waste generated annually is growing five times faster than the amount that is responsibly collected and recycled every...
